A Saudi woman filed for divorce after her husband assaulted her for cheering on Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, local media reported on Sunday.

The 20-year-old woman was physically and verbally abused by her husband after Real Madrid won against Barcelona in an El Clasico match.

The woman, who is a Real Madrid fan celebrated the victory by jumping and cheering for Ronaldo, much to the disappointment of her husband – a Barcelona fan.

"She started jumping around, screaming Ronaldo's name in front of her husband, who felt that was an insult to him," the woman’s friend told Saudi news site Ajel.

"He was already angry that his favourite team had lost and couldn't handle his wife's actions. He verbally abused her at first, then severely beat her," she added

Following the assault, the woman left the house returning to her parents' home, and filed for divorce.

The story widely circulated on social media sites and the Arabic hashtag #ManDivorcesWifeOverRonaldo quickly gained traction on Twitter.

Many were outraged by the husband's reaction:

Translation: He is clearly sick!

Translation: She is better off divorced than being married to a man without a brain!

Some blamed the woman – although she was the one who was physically assaulted:

Translation: That’s what you get for supporting Ronaldo!

Translation: Nothing good can come out of a woman who watches football and cheers on footballers!

While others fired shots at Ronaldo:

Translation: How dangerous you turned out to be Cristiano!

Translation: After making history, now he breaks hearts. Who exactly are you Cristiano?
