A car bomb exploded near a liquor store in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least two people, security and medical sources have said.

The blast went off shortly after midnight in the al-Battaween area, on a street known for its shops and restaurants selling alcohol, a police colonel said.

A medical source confirmed the death toll and said at least eight people were also wounded.

At least 13 people were killed in bomb attacks on two Shia neighbourhoods of the Iraqi capital a week earlier.

The Islamic State group, which has controlled swathes of Iraq since last year, frequently claims responsibility for car bombs in Baghdad.

There was no immediate claim for Tuesday's attack.
