The Islamic State group (IS) has claimed responsibility for double bomb attacks that left at least 13 people dead in two Shia-majority areas of Baghdad on Monday, according to security and medical officials.

A car bomb detonated near a market in the Ameen area of eastern Baghdad, and a roadside bomb exploded near a restaurant in Shaab in the north of the city.

The two attacks wounded at least 44 people, the officials said.

IS, which overran swathes of Iraq in June last year, frequently carries out attacks in Baghdad, with roadside bombs, suicide blasts and assassinations targeting Iraqi forces and government officials, with significant casualties among the civilian population.

The violence has killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands of Iraqis.

But bombings in Baghdad are much less frequent than they were before the 2014 militant offensive, possibly because the militants are occupied with operations elsewhere.

Iraqi forces backed by a US-led coalition and Iran have managed to regain significant ground north of Baghdad from IS, but much of western Iraq remains outside government control.
