This is Elisha Yared, smiling as he left an Israeli detention facility to be greeted by fellow settlers who were singing, chanting, and dancing in celebration.

Yared is an Israeli settler who is a suspect in the killing of Qusai Matan, a 19-year-old Palestinian, in the occupied West Bank last week.

On Wednesday, the Jewish extremist was released from detention and placed under house arrest. Yared is one of two Israeli settlers suspected of a role in the killing Qusai Matan during an attack on the Palestinian village of Burqa a week ago.

The other suspect, Yehiel Indore, was initially approved for release on Wednesday, but a decision was made to keep him in custody after a video reportedly containing new evidence was shown in a court hearing.

Settlers have framed the killing of Qusai Matan as an act of self-defence, while far-right Israeli politicians – such as Itamar Ben-Gvir – have thrown their support behind the accused. Cases against settlers accused of attacks against Palestinians are often closed on grounds of self-defence or lack of evidence.
