Tunisia’s public prosecutor has ordered an investigation into the death of a young man following his arrest by security forces in the northern part of the country.

The man died under suspicious circumstances on Saturday evening in the city of Tinja in the northern province of Bizerte, with the prosecution demanding an autopsy determine the cause of death.

The case has sparked widespread controversy on social media. On Sunday, a group protested in Tunja, burning tyres and forcing the closure of roads.

The country’s interior minister issued a statement on Sunday outlining the circumstances of his death, saying that a man was arrested for carrying suspicious packages during a security operation in Tunja. The man reportedly swallowed a suspicious substance when trying to escape from the officials.

However, the National Salvation Front, a coalition of Tunisian political parties, has called for an immediate, transparent and credible investigation into his death.

The Front alleged the man was mistreated by security officials and called out “repeated incidents of mysterious deaths of detainees and the delay in holding those responsible for committing crimes of torture and ill-treatment accountable.”
