Trump appointed treasury spokesperson who said Obama 'has loyalties to Islam'
President Donald Trump has selected a US treasury spokesperson who once claimed that Barack Obama is a Muslim and supports the country's enemies.
Monica Crowley was appointed assistant treasury secretary for public affairs last week, which effectively makes her the department's lead spokesperson.
But CNN has revealed that Crowley made a series of false claims against the former president on her Twitter page and blog in the past, including that he might be secretly a Muslim.
"Maybe politics didn't have anything to do with it, but Islam certainly did. And does. Obama was born to a Muslim father, which under Islam automatically made him a Muslim. He says he converted to Christianity as an adult, which under Islam makes him an apostate," Crowley wrote on her blog.
"He grew up in Indonesia, which is the most populous Muslim nation on earth. His stepfather was also a Muslim. He was steeped in Islam throughout his formative years, so it should come as no surprise that he has loyalties to Islam."
She then said alleged Obama once referred to there being 57 US states instead of 50, which was further "proof" the former president was a Muslim.
"The number of Muslim states in the Organization of the Islamic Conference is 57," she said.
"It may not come as a shock that he appears loyal to Islam. The question is: can he be both loyal to Islam and loyal to the United States. How could he... support the enemy?"
Crowley also made comments that point at her being part of the "birther movement", which falsely claimed Obama was born overseas and so not eligible to become president.
"If the birth certificate were never a big deal, why did No Drama Obama wait nearly three years before releasing it? Why endure and stoke all of the drama? To make those raising legitimate concerns about his origins and policies look like kooks? Maybe," she wrote.
She then went on to again question the president's faith, where he got the money from to go to university and how he got admitted to Harvard - despite the former president being known as a high-achiever throughout his academic life.
Crowley then said that Barack Obama "being sworn in as president with his full name, Barack Hussein Obama" hinted at an anti-American agenda as president.
"The two things he did along with [ordering the closure of Guantanamo Bay detention centre] was to order a halt to the prosecutions of terrorist suspects there, including the mastermind of the September 11th attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and other top al Qaeda terrorists, like Ramzi Binalshibh. He also issued an order against the use of enhanced interrogation tactics on such terrorists, including waterboarding."
She then said Obama requested his first formal television interview as president to be with Saudi broadcaster Al-Arabiya.
"Tells you where his head is, and possibly, his sympathies. Just sayin'."
