A three-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped and tortured in northern Syria has been found dead, The New Arab's Arabic-language sister site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

Ghosun Shawkan was abducted at 2pm local time on Monday. Her body, found on Tuesday, reportedly showed signs of torture and was dumped near her family home in the village of Kafra, northern Aleppo province.

The child's brutal killing follows the kidnap and murder of three-year-old Nour Al-Hamoudi and one-year-old Farah Al-Hamoudi, southern Idlib in February.

"Hours after she was kidnapped, they dumped her body in the middle of town in a horrific crime... villagers found her body at dawn today near her family's house, bearing signs of torture," the Azaz media office said in a statement on Tuesday.

The suspected kidnappers were driving a van when she was abducted, according to sources. Shawkan's family began searching for the child throughout the town until midnight without finding her.

The Azaz media office confirmed to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed say they have no new details about the crime, but are investigating the killing.

Kafra is currently under the control of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army, which opposes the Assad regime.

The province of Idlib and parts of the Aleppo province remain the only areas in Syria to be held by the Syrian opposition, following the Assad regime's crackdown on the Syrian uprising which demanded freedom from the regime's barbarous dictatorship.
