Gaza war: Three US troops killed in drone attack as fears of regional escalation rise
CIA-led talks in Paris show potential for a truce in the Israel's war in Gaza while a humanitarian crisis escalates with more than a million displaced.

Three US service members were killed and many wounded when an unmanned aerial drone attacked American forces stationed in northeastern Jordan on Sunday, raising fears of a regional escalation from Israel's war on Gaza.

The Director of the CIA is reportedly scheduled to meet with representatives from Qatar, Egypt, and Israel in Paris to discuss a potential temporary ceasefire in Gaza that includes a prisoner exchange.

The talks come as Israel continues its assault on Gaza's south, forcing residents of Khan Younis to flee for the border city of Rafah. Gaza's displaced people have been left to sleep on the streets and in tents, exposed to harsh weather and flooding.

Despite the International Court of Justice ruling on Friday that Israel must do its utmost to limit death and destruction in Gaza, the Palestinian death toll has continued to climb.

Health authorities in Gaza said on Sunday that Israel's war on the besieged territory has killed at least 26,422 people and injured 65,087 since 7 October.

Israel is formally on trial at the ICJ for alleged genocide against Palestinians.

In its granting of provisional measures, court also ordered Israel to urgently get aid to Gaza. The amount of aid entering the territory remains well below the daily average of 500 trucks before the war, and UN agencies say distribution within Gaza has been severely hampered by the fighting and delays at Israeli checkpoints.

Several Western states, including the Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and the US, have suspended funding for the UN's agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) following Israeli claims that 12 of the agency's staff participated in the 7 October attack by Hamas and allied groups.

The Israeli allegations – based on "confessions" obtained in interrogations – have not been independently verified, with observers accusing Israel's allies of collectively punishing the Palestinian people by suspending UNRWA funding.

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Japan said it is joining other countries in suspending funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees following Israeli charges that some UNRWA staff took part in Hamas's October 7 attack.

The agency has fired several staff over Israel's accusations and promised a thorough investigation into the claims, which were not specified, while Israel has vowed to stop the agency's work in Gaza after the war.

Several of the agency's top donors including the United States and Germany have since halted funding to UNRWA, which has been at the heart of humanitarian efforts in Gaza.

Japan said late Sunday it was "extremely concerned about the alleged involvement of UNRWA staff members in the terror attack on Israel on October 7 last year."

"In response, Japan has decided to suspend additional funding to UNRWA for the time being while UNRWA conducts an investigation into the matter and considers measures to address the allegations," a foreign ministry statement said.

We have done so since October 7, and will continue to. There has not been a change in our policy," a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said.

Jordan condemned on Sunday the "terrorist attack" on a military advance post just inside its border with Syria that killed three US military and injured dozens, and said it was cooperating with Washington to secure its frontier.

In the first official statement on the attack, staunch US ally Jordan said it was working with Washington to fight terrorism. Earlier, a government spokesperson had said the attack was on a US base in Syria adjacent to the border but not on Jordanian soil.

A senior Jordanian security source told Reuters that Jordan had recently appealed for more advanced US defence hardware and support because of worries Iran and its proxies could become embroiled more deeply in any wider Middle East conflagration.

Jordan had also requested Patriot air defence systems from Washington as part of its growing concern about being caught in the crossfire if the war in Gaza pulls in Iran and its well-armed regional militias on the kingdom's borders.

Far-right Israelis, Ben-Gvir, call for Gaza settlements
8:47 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Thousands of Israelis, including far-right ministers and allies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, gathered in Jerusalem on Sunday to call for the re-establishment of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip.

"If we don't want another October 7, we need to... control the territory," said National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, alluding to the deadly Hamas attack that sparked the war, now in its fourth month.

The controversial politician said Israel should "encourage voluntary emigration" of Palestinians from Gaza, echoing past remarks that drew sharp rebuke from close ally the United States and the wider international community.

Settlements are considered illegal under international law.

Speakers at the rally, held at a Jerusalem convention centre and attended by members of Netanyahu's party and several other ministers, exhorted the premier to make their contentious dream a reality.

Some advocated the deportation of Gaza's Palestinians and declared that settlements were the only way to ensure security for Israelis.
