Three Palestinians injured, several detained as Israeli forces crack down on anti-settlement protests
Three Palestinians were injured on Monday and Tuesday as Israeli soldiers cracked down on anti-settlement protests in the West Bank city of Nablus and the nearby town of Beita.
Israeli soldiers guarding Jewish settlers who were visiting Joseph’s Tomb on the outskirts of Nablus opened fire on a Palestinian man as he drove his car through the area. The man was injured by a bullet to the foot and shrapnel to his face.
"A young man was surprised that occupation soldiers were in his way and they opened fire on his vehicle, wounding him and overturning the car," Ahmed Jibril, the head of the emergency department at the Palestinian Red Crescent in Nablus told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, The New Arab’s Arabic-language sister site.
"Emergency teams managed to reach him and transport him to the Rafidia Government Hospital in Nablus for treatment and his condition is now stable."
Dozens of Palestinian protesters were also affected by tear gas fired by the Israeli soldiers.
On Monday evening, two Palestinians were injured after Israeli soldiers attacked the regular "night confusion" protest held by residents of Beita against the illegal settler outpost of Evatyar, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Israeli settlers also blocked the road between Nablus and Jenin in the northern West Bank on Monday evening, pelting Palestinian cars with stones, according to Ghassan Daghlis, a Palestinian Authority official responsible for monitoring settlement activity.
In Hebron in the southern West Bank, a Palestinian woman was injured after being beaten by settlers on Tuesday.
Israeli forces also demolished a school under construction in the Al-Salam suburb northeast of Jerusalem, despite approval having been granted by the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem. They used sound bombs and tear gas to disperse Palestinians protesting in the area.
Several Palestinians were also detained throughout the West Bank by Israeli forces on Tuesday, including three in Hizma northeast of Jerusalem and three near Bethlehem south of the West Bank.
