Palestinian officials have said that at least 23 Palestinians have been arrested by Israeli police in east Jerusalem overnight and during Monday, 4 days after a Palestinian suspect in the attempted murder of a right-wing Jewish rabbi was shot dead by Israeli security forces.

However, an Israeli police spokeswoman only confirmed four arrests, without accounting for the number of people who might have been arrested by other security forces.

111 Palestinians have already been arrested since October 22 as a result of the ongoing violence in the Israeli occupied east Jerusalem. The latest are all from the Old City, and the Arab neighbourhoods of Issawiya and Wadi Joz.

Israeli police have set up checkpoints in Issawiya and Silwan, local activists said.

Tension has risen over the past few months with the impact of Israel's 50 day assault on Gaza, the murder of a Palestinian teenager by Jewish extremists, and the killing of three Israeli teens in the West Bank.

The West Bank has been occupied by Israel since 1967, and Israel continues to build settlements on Palestinian land there, something regarded as illegal under international law.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club says around 7,000 Palestinians are in Israeli jails, including 550 under administrative detention whereby prisoners can be held for six month periods that can be indefinitely renewed by court order.

On Sunday, Israel approved an amendment to the penal code that would enforce tougher punishment - up to 20 years in prison - for Palestinians who throw rocks at cars.
