South Africa band cancels Israel show after BDS pressure
A South African band have cancelled a performance at a concert in Israel, local news website Channel 24 has reported, amid calls from activists for other artists to snub the show.
The outlet said on Monday that the management of Black Motion told the organisers of the Meteor Festival that award-winning duo will not take part in the music festival next month.
The report added that festival organisers have failed to remove the band from their lineup.
South Africa's Boycott Sanctions Divestment (BDS) chapter have hailed the move.
"BDS South Africa welcomes the news.. that Black Motion are not performing in Israel," the group said in an online statement.
The group said the decision was made after its representatives met with the band's management to urge them to cancel the show.
The BDS movement urges businesses, artists and universities to sever ties with Israel over its violations of international law, it includes thousands of volunteers around the world.
US singer Lana Del Rey has caused outrage after she defended her decision to play at the Meteor Festival.
The singer has said her upcoming show will help solve the decades-long conflict by "shifting the energetic vibration"
BDS supporters take inspiration from the campaign used by international activists to end apartheid in South Africa by isolating Israel politically and economically.
