IS shows execution of Egyptian soldiers in propaganda video
A video has emerged of Islamic State group [IS] militants killing two Egyptian soldiers as well as carrying out sniper and IED attacks in Sinai.
IS' Egyptian affiliate "Wilayat Sinai (Sinai Province)" released the gruesome 35-minute video on Monday that shows two Egyptian soldiers dressed in orange jumpsuits being executed by an IS militant.
The video named the soldiers as Capt. Mohammad al-Qalawi and conscript Magdy Mosaad.
Local sources told The New Arab that the two soldiers had been captured from a military checkpoint in the city of al-Arish, the provincial capital of North Sinai.
The latest IS propaganda video also contained footage of soldiers being sniped at and military vehicles being targeted by roadside bombs.
Last Sunday, an IS gunman shot dead a police major in al-Arish.
The jihadists have kept up attacks in Sinai, mostly roadside bombings and ambushes, despite a massive military campaign to uproot IS from the eastern peninsula bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
Most of the group's attacks have targeted security forces, but it has also attacked Coptic Christians and tourists.
The group claimed responsibility for yet-to-be-confirmed bombing blamed for the downing of a Russian airliner carrying holidaymakers from an Egyptian resort last year, killing all 224 people on board.
Meanwhile, human rights groups have accused the Egyptian military of committing numerous abuses in counter-insurgency operations against the group in Sinai.
