Scores killed in an explosion in Turkey-Syria border town

At least 10 people were killed and more than 30 injured in an explosion in a market of Tal Abyad, a town on the border between Syria and Turkey.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said pro-Turkey fighters and civilians were among the dead and injured in the car explosion.

Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu Agency called it a bomb attack in the marketplace.

The border town has been witness to some of the heaviest fighting since the Turkish military launched an incursion last month against Kurdish militias in northeast Syria.

The news comes as the Observatory reported Russian airstrikes had killed 6 civilians in Idlib province, the worst such incident since the end of August this year. 

Syria's brutal eight-year-long civil war has killed 370,000 people and displaced millions from their homes since beginning in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-Assad protests.

Propped up by Moscow and Tehran, Bashar al-Assad's regime has been able to take control of most of the country. 

Turkey added a new dimension to the conflict in October 2019 when Turkish forces began military operations against Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria.

Ankara has carved out a ‘safe zone’ in northern Syria after driving out Kurdish militias, that its troops began patrolling alongside Russian soldiers earlier this week.
