Israeli police on Friday prevented Palestinian men under 40 from entering Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound, as tensions grow in the city.

Officers deployed in force, as clashes broke out on Thursday night for the second night in a row.

Violence pitting Palestinians against police has shaken occupied east Jerusalem on an almost daily basis since the murder of a Palestinian teenager by Jewish extremists in July.

Clashes intensified during a 50-day war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The most recent clashes come after a Palestinian ran his car into a crowd of pedestrians on Wednesday, killing an Israeli child, and injuring six other people before he was shot dead by police.

Days earlier, a resident of an Israeli settlement in the ocupied West Bank - which are illegal under international law - ran over a Palestinian child in Sinjil. The girl, named Enas Khalil, later died in hospital.

'Terror attack'

Israeli police branded Wednesday's road collision involving 21-year-old Abdelrahman Shaludi from Silwan a "terror attack".

Silwan - a densely populated Arab neighbourhood on a steep hillside just south of the Old City - has been the focus of Palestinian anger over Jewish settlements in east Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu warned any further such events would be met with "the harshest response".

Shaludi had served time in prison for being a member of an armed group. He was shot by police as he tried to run away from the scene of the vehicle collision and later died from his wounds.
