Pakistan has returned two missing fishermen to Omani authorities after they were discovered alive more than one week following their announced disappearance off the Sea of Oman.

Salem Al-Jaafari and Ali Al-Jaafari had been missing since 9 June but were spotted near Pakistan by a merchant ship, the Oman Observer reported on Saturday.

The news outlet on Monday said the men have now been turned over to Muscat's consulate general in Karachi, which expressed its gratitude to Pakistan's Maritime Security Agency for its assistance.

After a check-up was performed, Pakistani maritime authorities confirmed they were in good medical condition.

The Omani embassy is currently working to repatriate the fishermen, whose ship's engine broke down during an expedition, leaving them stranded at sea for nearly 10 days and prompting a desperate search.

Following their rescue, the fishermen were able to contact a family member to let them know they were alive and well, the Oman Observer reported on Saturday, citing social media.
