Liverpool football legend Mohamed Salah’s great uncle passed away as the world-renowned star turned 30, Egyptian media reported on Wednesday.

The Egyptian superstar's great-uncle Saeed Saleh Abu Ghalia died after a sudden illness.

Abu Ghalia’s funeral prayer was held at a mosque in Salah's home village of Nagrij in Gharbiyah province.

He was buried at his family’s plot at a local cemetery, the village’s mayor Maher Shateyeh said.

Prior to news of his relative's death, Mo Salah had posted a picture of himself on Instagram with a football-shaped cake to celebrate his birthday.

Earlier this month Salah won the Professional Footballers' Association men’s player of the year award after a season in which he scored 23 goals in the Premier League.

He was also crowned Liverpool FC's best player for the 2021-22 season by the club's fans and former players.

Salah confirmed at the end of May that he would be seeing his contract with Liverpool through by staying at the club next season.

However, the footballer's future at the club appears uncertain, as the Liverpool legend remains non-committal about his plans for the more distant future.
