Libya finds over 100 bodies after boat capsizes
More than 100 bodies have been retrieved after a boat capsized off Libya's shores, just hours after news of a boat capsizing off Greece.
Ayoub Gassim told The Associated Press that at least 107 bodies have been pulled out of the waters near the western city of Zwara, but that the expected death toll is likely to be higher since such boats usually carry up to 125 people.
He said the Libyan coast guards found the empty boat on Thursday and that it's possible the boat capsized on Wednesday.
Gassim blamed Europe for "doing nothing but counting bodies" to stop the illegal migration from Libya.
The discovery of the bodies off Zwara is the latest in a string of tragedies that have already claimed the lives of thousands in recent weeks.
Some 204,000 refugees have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe since January, according to the United Nations refugee agency, while more than 2,500 people have died trying to make the perilous journey this year.
The vast majority were killed crossing between Libya and Italy, as arrivals to Greece have fallen sharply since the EU entered a controversial deal on March 20 with key transit country Turkey to stem the flow of migrants.
