Israel 'shoots' and detains elderly Palestinian woman claiming she had a knife

The woman, not yet identified, was shot near the village of Nilin in the central occupied West Bank district of Ramallah.

According to witness testimonies given to Palestine based Ma’an News Agency, Israeli occupation forces had injured the woman by opening live ammunition on her. They allegedly did so after suspecting her of intending to carry out a stabbing attack when she walked towards Israeli soldiers at an Israeli checkpoint. 

Other witnesses claimed the soldiers had only opened live ammunition in the air, and the woman had randomly fainted before she was detained. 

No one reported seeing a knife on the woman. 

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that the incident was not under the army's jurisdiction and no police spokesperson gave a comment.

Last Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu vowed never to evacuate illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, drawing outrage from Palestinian officials.

The right-wing leader's pledge came after a meeting earlier in the day with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who is on a three-day tour in Israel and Palestine to discuss efforts to restart peace talks

"We have returned here for eternity," Netanyahu said, speaking at a ceremony in the settlement of Barkan in the northern West Bank.

"There will be no more uprooting of settlements in the Land of Israel. Settlements will not be uprooted."

"There is a momentum of development in Judea and Samaria," he added.
