The statement added that the drone was "on a special mission in the Gaza Strip, and had onboard infrared cameras and a device equipped to carry out its mission".

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said, "last night a small plane was shot down over the southern Gaza Strip and the incident is being investigated".

On Saturday, Israel struck Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip after an alleged launch of a Hamas drone towards Israel.

The previous day two Palestinian teenagers were shot dead by Israeli forces during Great March of Return protests.
