A former leader of the Islamic State (IS) group has been arrested by Kurdish-led and international coalition forces in Syria's Deir Az-Zour province.

The former senior member of the extremist group was arrested during a security operation in the town of Jadid Bakara conducted with coalition air support, the media office of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in a statement overnight Wednesday.

The detainee was involved in planning attacks and transferring weapons, improvised bombs, ammunition and money to the cells belonging to the extremist group in Deir Az-Zour and Syria's north and east, the SDF said.

On Wednesday night, two SDF members were injured following an attack carried out by gunmen on a motorcycle. The attack, which was claimed by IS, targeted a checkpoint at the entrance to the village of Al-Hariji in northern Deir Ez-Zour.

The SDF is loyal to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, a Kurdish-led authority that has broken away from the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad.

While IS has lost all the territory it once controlled in Syria and neighbouring Iraq, it continues to fight a low-level insurgency in both countries.
