Eight people were killed and one injured early Monday in Kuwait after a car rammed into a crowd, local media have reported.

The incident occurred after the collision of three cars in Kabad, about 35 kilometres out of Kuwait City, when a crowd formed around the cars in an attempt to rescue the victims.

A fourth car then drove into the crowd at a high speed, according to the Kuwaiti Fire Service Directorate, leading to eight deaths.

The Interior Ministry's General Department of Public Relations and Security Media said authorities have opened an investigation into the accident.

Kuwait, a Gulf country of about 4.5 million people, has a high amount of fatalities from traffic incidents.

At least 120 people have died in road accidents in Kuwait since the start of the year, Gulf News reported. Last year, accidents killed 401 people.
