Bus carrying women, children crashes in Turkey killing scores

Authorities in Turkey say at least 20 people have died and 11 others are in critical condition after a tour bus tipped over on a cliffside road.

The governor of Mugla province, Amir Cicek, said the vehicle tipped over on a bend in the road as it travelled from Izmir province to the seaside resort of Marmaris.

The bus was carrying about 40 people, many of whom were women. The cause of the accident remains unclear and will be investigated, Cicek added.

The road has been closed off to traffic, causing huge congestion.

The Hurriyet newspaper quoted Marmaris mayor Ali Acar as indicating an "error by the driver", without giving further details.

Other media outlets reported that the bus left from the western city of Izmir carrying only women and children who were on a trip for Mothers' Day, celebrated in Turkey on Sunday.

Marmaris is one of the country's main resorts on the Mediterranean, and a popular weekend destination for many Turks as temperatures climb.
