A lone sheep has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found "guilty" of killing a woman, in a bizarre case in South Sudan.

The incident, which took place last week in the country’s Rumbek East County according to the Saudi daily Gulf News, involved the sheep repeatedly attacking and head-butting 45-year-old Adhieu Chaping, who later succumbed to her injuries.

A spokesperson, Elijah Mabor Makuach said to Sudan’s Eye Radio station: "The ram attacked by hitting her ribs and the old woman died immediately. So this is what happened in Rumbek East in a place called Akuel Yol".

"Our role as police is to provide safety and separate fights. The ram was apprehended and currently under custody at a Police Station of Maleng Agok Payam," he added.

Police also declared the sheep’s owner innocent, and insisted that the ram "deserved" to be arrested as it perpetrated the crime.

"The case shall be forwarded to customary court where the case can be handed amicably," Makuach further added.

The sheep will now spend the next three years in a military camp in Aduel County’s headquarters in the country’s Lakes State.

Meanwhile, it was also reported that the ram’s owner Duony Manyang Dhal, must offer five cows to the victim’s family as a means of compensation, as per a court ruling in Rumbek City.

The owner will also lose the ram by the end of its sentence, as it will be handed over to the victim’s family, in adherence to local customary law, cited the British Lad Bible website.
