Algeria’s state-run television has begun allowing women wearing the hijab, or the headscarf, to present the news again for the first time since the North African country gained independence from France in 1962.

The unofficial ban came to an end after veiled anchorwoman Najwa Djedi presented a show on a public television news channel earlier this week.

There are no laws prohibiting women from wearing the veil on television. Some have attributed the absence of hijab-wearing women on television to personal decisions made by those in senior positions.

Nasira Mazhoud was suspended from her anchorwoman role back in 2012 after she began wearing the hijab, as have several other women presenters.

The only state television channel that permitted female broadcasters to appear in the hijab was the Quran channel.

About 99 percent of Algeria's population is Muslim.
