An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 struck near the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The quake was at a depth of 86 km (53.4 miles) and occurred about 164 km east of Kunduz, EMSC said.

This follows an earthquake in northeastern Afghanistan on Monday which killed at least eight people.

The 5.3 magnitude event struck near the city of Jalalabad in the early hours, the US Geological Survey said.

A earthquake in Afghanistan in June killed around 1,000 people and injured 1,500, according to the Red Cross. In some areas of the most affected provinces, Khost and Paktika, 80 per cent of homes have been damaged.
