Turkey has rescued a group of migrants who were stranded on an island as he attempted to reach Greece.

Turkey's coastguard rescued dozens of migrants stranded on an island as they attempted to reach Greece, the coastguard .

Aerial footage showed a group of 40 refugees trapped on the island off the coast of the western province if Balikesir.

Turkey's coastguard dispatched two helicopters and one boat to retrieve the migrants - which included women and children - after a rescue call from the party.

Thousands of migrants have crossed from Turkey to Greece hoping to reach Europe.

The Turkish coast guard intercepted more than 23,500 people this year, although these numbers are below previous years following tighter security.

Turkey is hosting around 3 million Syrian refugees, and has been a transit point for Iraqi, Afghan, Pakistani and Iranian migrants trying to reach EU countries.
