Video clips shared on Kuwaiti social media showed the remarkable moment a 15-metre-long whale died and was washed up the Gulf state's shores.

Local media reported that the mammal - the size of a bus - was in southern Kuwait's seas before being retrieved by naval officers. Video footage shows it being lifted out of the sea by a crane and loaded onto a truck.

Observers identified the creature as a baleen whale, a sea mammals that feed on krill through keratinous plates in their mouths, instead of teeth.

Baleen whales travel through the Gulf of Oman from the Indian Ocean in order to feed on krill in the Persian Gulf.
