Saudi and Qatari ministers signed an amended protocol for the establishment of the Qatari-Saudi Cooperation Council on Wednesday during a meeting at the NEOM megacity project in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The signing took place during a meeting between Saudi Minister of State and acting Foreign Minister, Dr Musaed Bin Mohammed Al-Aiban and Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, according to Gulf News.
The council, which is co-chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamil bin Hamad Al-Thani, aims to foster bilateral ties and assist the neighbouring states in achieving their ambitious 2030 development goals.
The Qatari foreign minister also met with Crown Prince Mohammed during his visit to Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh and Doha re-established diplomatic ties earlier this year, following a rift that saw Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, and the UAE sever ties with Qatar in mid-2017.
The Saudi-led bloc accused Qatar of fostering close ties with Iran and supporting terrorism, charges which Doha strongly denied.
Saudi Arabia, however, has taken the lead among the four in mending ties with Qatar, scoring points with key ally the US while also standing to benefit economically as it seeks to lure more foreign investment.
Earlier this month, Qatar's emir named his appointment for envoy to Saudi Arabia, following Riyadh’s reappointment of an ambassador to Doha in June.
