The United States said Sunday that multinational talks in Paris came to an "understanding" on a possible deal for Hamas to release hostages taken from Israel, and for a new ceasefire in war-torn Gaza.
"Representatives of Israel, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar met in Paris and came to an understanding among the four of them about what the basic contours of a hostage deal for temporary ceasefire would look like," White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CNN.
The deal is still under negotiation, said Sullivan, who added there will have to be indirect discussions by Qatar and Egypt with Hamas.
After more than four months of shortages inside the besieged Gaza Strip, the World Food Programme said this week its teams had reported "unprecedented levels of desperation", while the UN warned that 2.2 million people were on the brink of famine.
Gaza's health ministry announced Sunday that close to 29,700 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since October 7, with more than 69,800 others injured.
