Palestinian fighters attacked government security headquarters in Jenin in the West Bank on Sunday after security services detained and allegedly beat a man from the Jenin refugee camp.
Members of the Palestinian Preventive Security service stopped Talal Al-Hosary at around 1 am local time. He was reportedly beaten before being taken to the security agency’s headquarters, but later released, The New Arab’s sister site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.
Talal is the brother of Abdullah Al-Hosary, a slain fighter who was a senior member of the Jenin Brigades armed group.
It was not clear why he was detained and beaten.
The arrest prompted retaliation from the Jenin Brigades, who have been involved in fighting with Israeli forces who regularly raid Jenin.
They attacked the security forces’ headquarters with heavy gunfire and homemade explosives.
Videos were shared on social media of their attack.
The attack lasted for about two and a half hours, according to local sources, who said the Palestinian security forces did not respond. One of their personnel was reportedly wounded.
Palestinian officials intervened to calm the situation.
Similar incidents have taken place in previous months following the arrest of resistance fighters.
"Everyone must understand that the resistance and the pursuers of the occupation and the families of the martyrs are a red line, and that those who attack them will be burned by the fire of the resistance," the father of a slain Palestinian fighter said.
Jenin is frequently targeted by deadly Israeli raids. Israeli forces killed six Palestinians there in early March, and nine Palestinians there in January.
