A man accused of killing a Kuwaiti woman has been charged with first degree murder in a case that has shocked the Gulf state.

The man is accused of abducting Farah Hamza Akbar, stabbing her to death, and dumping her outside the Adan Hospital in Mubarak Al-Kabeer, where she later died from her injuries.

Murder is a capital crime in Kuwait.

At the time of her killing, it was reported by AP that a man had repeatedly harassed the woman after her family rejected his marriage proposal.

Akbar's sister, herself a lawyer, had repeatedly warned the public prosecutor and several police stations that if the man was released her sister's life would be in danger.

After Akbar's death, a video of her sister weeping outside the hospital went viral in Kuwait sparking outrage in the Gulf state.

Her death sparked a wave of peaceful protests in Kuwait and calls for tougher action against gender-based violence.
