Kuwait's parliament on Tuesday elected lawmaker Ahmad Al-Saadoun as the legislature's new speaker.
Al-Saadoun is set to hold the post until the end of the National Assembly's term, in accordance with the country's constitution.
The 88-year-old previously held the post in 1985, 1992 and 1996.
Al-Saadoun's election to the post follows legislative elections held at the end of September. His predecessor, former lawmaker Marzouq al-Ghanim, was criticised by lawmakers as being pro-government.
The vote came after Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah gave a teary appeal for the legislative and executive branches to end squabbling over "petty matters" and to focus on the country's development.
September's parliamentary elections handed opposition lawmakers 60% of seats in the 50-seat assembly.
Early elections were called after Sheikh Meshal appointed a new prime minister and dissolved parliament in an attempted to end a feud between the government and parliament.
