Israel targets Palestinian journalists to hide facts and massacres in Gaza: PJS

At least 141 Palestinian journalists have been killed so far by Israeli attacks since the war on Gaza broke out seven months ago. 

On Thursday, Mohammed Bassam al-Jamal, a Rafah-based journalist who covered the Israeli war on Gaza over the past seven months, was killed by an Israeli airstrike that targeted his house in Rafah. 

Besides Mohammed, his father-in-law, two brothers, and his child were also killed by the Israeli airstrike, according to the health ministry in Gaza. 

Five days ago, Amna Hamid, a Palestinian poet and journalist, was also killed with her eldest son by an Israeli airstrike while she was inside her house in the al-Shatea refugee camp in Gaza City.

A few days before her death, Aman appeared in a video clip broadcast by the Israeli news outlet Channel 14 to incite against her and others who appeared in a video clip about the Al-Shifa Medical Complex before the Israeli arm stormed it on 9 March 2024. 

Al-Jamal, Amna, as well as all the Palestinian journalists who remain in the besieged enclave, are trying their best to expose Israel's crimes against humanity in Gaza by producing hundreds of visual and written stories for local and international agencies. 

"It seems that such strong work has provoked the Israeli occupation, mainly as it exposes Israel's crimes for the whole world, which contributes to losing its power in the world, primarily in the European countries," Tahseen al-Astal, the deputy of the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate, remarked to The New Arab

"This is why Israel decided to attack the journalists in Gaza," he says, "It does not want the Palestinians' voice to be heard, and it always seeks and does all its efforts to shut up the voice of the truth in Gaza." 

Palestinian journalists in Gaza have been leading the battle with the Israeli army has committed hundreds of massacres against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,al-Astal explained.

Israel also deliberately targets the families of journalists in Gaza, confirming that dozens of Palestinian journalists' families were martyred by the missiles of Israeli aircraft bombing the Strip, al-Astal said. 

"Day by day, all of us (Palestinian journalists in Gaza) feel that we may be the upcoming target for Israel to end our roles in translating the reality in Gaza and let the world see what is happening here," Salama Maarouf, the head of the government media office in Gaza, said to TNA

Since 7 October, the Israeli army has been launching a large-scale war at the coastal enclave under the pretext of responding to the unprecedented surprise attack led by Hamas on the Israeli military bases and civilian settlements within and around the Gaza envelope. 

Ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip killed at least 34,454 Palestinians and wounded more than  77,757 others, according to the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza. 

The ministry confirmed that out of the total deaths, around 141 were journalists, and dozens of others were their relatives. 

However, the Committee to Protect Journalists said in a press statement that as of 26 April 2024, CPJ's preliminary investigations showed at least 92 journalists and media workers were among the Palestinian casualties

"Journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the conflict during the Israeli ground assault, including devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, supply shortages, and extensive power outages," the CPJ added.
