"[Israel] hold Hamas responsible and accountable for all attacks emanating from the Gaza Strip," the Israeli military said in a statement.
The mortar round was fired from the Palestinian territory on Wednesday and hit a field close to the Gaza border causing no injuries.
A number of rockets and mortar rounds from Palestinian militant groups have hit Israel over the past few months, leading to "retaliatory" air raids on the besieged territory.
