Israel bombs Gaza, settlers kill four Palestinians in West Bank
Live Story

At least four Palestinians were killed Wednesday as armed Israeli settlers attacked a town south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said.

In separate incidents, a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli army fire near Bethlehem and a teenager was killed near Hebron, the ministry said.

The latest fatalities bring to 29 the Palestinian death toll in the West Bank in violence related to the conflict since Hamas militants launched on Saturday an assault on Israel's south from the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Israel escalated its response to the surprise attack by Hamas with intensified bombing as its fighter jets struck hundreds of targets across Gaza on Wednesday, turning entire neighbourhoods into rubble.

Gaza's health ministry said that 1,100 people have been killed and more than 5,340 injured in the crowded coastal enclave,.

Hamas has fired rockets into the Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod in response to the Gaza onslaught, while Israel and Hezbollah traded cross-border fire after rockets were launched from southern Lebanon.

Israel has confirmed over 1,200 Israeli deaths.

The first plane carrying US ammunition landed in Israel later Wednesday, in preparation of a possible ground offensive of Gaza.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan says Israel's blockade and bombing of Gaza is a disproportionate response amounting to a "massacre," but repeated Ankara's offer to mediate.

Erdogan, speaking to his ruling AK Party in parliament, said even war has a "morality" but the flare-up since the weekend "very severely" violated that.

"Preventing people meeting their most fundamental needs and bombing housing where civilians live - in short, conducting a conflict using every sort of shameful method - is not a war, it's a massacre," he said, referring to Israel cutting off electricity and water to Gaza and destroying infrastructure.

As Gaza war rages, Israeli forces kill 27 Palestinians in West Bank

As Israel declared war on Hamas and relentlessly pounded Gaza following Saturday's devastating attack by the Palestinian movement, violence has risen in the occupied West Bank, risking further escalation after more than a year of continuous Israeli raids and violence.

Israeli security forces have killed at least 27 Palestinians during clashes in the West Bank since Saturday, as Palestinian factions called on people in the Palestinian territory to join the fight against Israel's occupation.

On Wednesday, three Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli security forces and masked Jewish settlers in Qusra village near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said, after the Israeli army said it was supplying licensed citizens with thousands of firearms "to bolster defence systems" across the country.

By Wednesday, military checkpoints remained closed and roads in several parts of the West Bank were blocked with mounds of dirt, restricting movement.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has not joined his former ally Gantz, but the statement said a seat would be "reserved" for him in the war cabinet.

Netanyahu's extreme-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies would remain in government.

The premier has agreed to freeze the hardline government's divisive judicial overhaul, which had triggered mass street protests - the biggest in the country's history.

"During the war, no bills or government-sponsored motions that are unrelated to the war would be advanced," the statement said.

The organisation added that the fourth died while performing their humanitarian work at the Karni crossing, east of Gaza.

They are Khalil Al-Sharif, 26, Yusri Al-Masry, 29, Ahmed Dahman, 24, and Hatem Awad, all of whom are residents of Gaza City.

Two boys and a girl were injured in the village of Dhayra in southern Lebanon on Wednesday as a result of Israeli bombing.

Another 20 suffered panic attacks as a result of the bombing, Musaa Shaalan, a member of the local emergency services, told The New Arab (TNA).

The village came under Israeli shelling after rockets were launched from the Lebanese border into Israel Wednesday morning.

Civil defense personnel went from house to house, assessing damages and calling out for anyone trapped in the rubble. Fires were still burning amid scattered debris of homes hit by the shelling.

"What do we have to do with anything? My house is destroyed. They hit houses, not fighters. We were hiding in our houses," Ali Mustafa, a state employee who was off duty, told TNA.

The statement continued: "Al-Qassam and the resistance targeted the [Israeli] military and security system, which is a legitimate target. The video clips from the field and the testimonies of settlers confirm that civilians and children were spared."

Several media outlets - particularly in the West - have claimed Hamas killed children during their surprise attack in Israel on Saturday.

Egypt foreign minister discusses Gaza aid with UN

Egypt's top diplomat Sameh Shoukry hosted talks with the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees on Wednesday as spiralling violence in neighbouring Gaza displaced more than 263,000 people.

Shoukry's talks with UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini focused on "how to provide protection for civilians and ensure regular access of services and relief aid to Gaza," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, also attended the meeting.

Shoukry warned of the "dangerous humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip" and said Egypt "fully supports UN agencies" in ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The only entry point to Gaza not controlled by Israel is the Rafah crossing from Egypt, which Israeli aircraft bombed three times between Monday and Tuesday.

Shoukry warned of "the consequences of policies of collective punishment, starvation and siege, in violation of international humanitarian law".

Jordan's king says no stability in region without emergence of Palestinian state

Jordan's King Abdullah said on Wednesday no peace was possible in the Middle East without the emergence of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

The escalating violence showed the region would not "enjoy stability, security or peace" without the emergence of a Palestinian state with sovereignty on land that Israel had captured in the 1967 Arab-Israel war.

A two-state solution was the only option, the monarch told deputies in a speech at the opening of a new parliamentary session.

Israel not acting 'like a state' in Gaza: Erdogan

Israel is not conducting itself "like a state" in the Gaza Strip, Turkey's president said on Wednesday, as Israel pounded the territory after a Hamas onslaught.

"Israel should not forget that if it acts more like an organisation rather than a state, it'll finish by being treated as such," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, attacking "shameful methods" of the Israeli army in the densely-populated Gaza Strip.

"Bombing civilian sites, killing civilians, blocking humanitarian aid and trying to present these as achievements are the acts of an organisation and not a state," he said.

Erdogan usually uses the word "organisation" when he refers to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is listed as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies.

"We think that a war should have an ethic and that both parties should respect it. Unfortunately, this principle is gravely violated in Israel and in Gaza," he said, denouncing the "murders of civilians on Israeli territory" and "the blind massacre of innocents in a Gaza subjected to constant bombardment".

More than 260,000 people displaced in Gaza: UN

Over 260,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Gaza Strip, as heavy Israeli bombardments from the air, land and sea continue to hit the Palestinian enclave, the United Nations said.

"Over 263,934 people in Gaza are believed to have fled their homes," said UN humanitarian agency OCHA said in an update Tuesday, warning that "this number is expected to rise further".

It said that around 3,000 people had been displaced "due to previous escalations", prior to Saturday.

The bombing campaign has destroyed more than 1,000 housing units, and 560 have been so severely damaged they are uninhabitable, OCHA said, citing Palestinian authorities.

Among the displaced, nearly 175,500 people sought shelter in 88 schools run by the UN agency supporting Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, it said.

More than 14,500 others had fled to 12 government schools, while close to 74,000 were estimated to be staying with relatives and neighbours or seeking shelters in churches and other facilities.

The number of displaced people inside of Gaza "represents the highest number of people displaced since the 50-day escalation of hostilities in 2014," it said.

"Meeting basic needs is becoming increasingly challenging for those who have not been displaced," OCHA warned.

Israel has imposed what it called a "complete siege" on the already blockaded Gaza Strip, cutting off food, water, fuel and electricity - a move that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned would worsen an already dire humanitarian situation.
