Israeli forces and Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah traded fire throughout Wednesday as tensions soared after six Israeli troops were injured in an attack on northern Israel after three members of the Shia armed group were killed in a drone strike the day before.

Gaza's residents faced increasing attacks from Israeli forces across the strip. Israel said its forces were conducting a "focused operation" in Beit Hanoun in northeast Gaza while residents of Nuseirat refugee camp said they were facing intense bombardment.

Dozens of civilians, including children were killed and wounded over the past day, including in Rafah in south Gaza, local authorities said.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council said a vote would take place on Friday on request tabled by Algeria for full Palestinian membership of the UN.
