Gunmen opened fire on a Lebanese army patrol and military positions in several areas across the Baalbek region killing one soldier, according to Monday news reports.

"A number of armed (men) fired at a patrol belonging to the army and military centres... which led to the martyrdom of one of the soldiers," the military command said, according to Reuters.

The reports did not specify whether the attackers were apprehended.

According to The Daily Star, wanted Lebanese citizen "Abbas Al-Masry" fired shots into the air while attempting to force his way through a checkpoint in Baalbek City, a day earlier.

Soldiers at the checkpoint shot and injured Al-Masry and his companion, who were transferred to a hospital for treatment.

It is not clear whether these two incidents are related.
