An Egyptian court upheld a one-month jail sentence and a one-year suspended sentence against Al-Zamalek football club's controversial president Mortada Mansour, after was found guilty of defamation against his Al-Ahly counterpart Mahmoud El-Khateeb.
The verdicts were issued on Saturday after the court had rejected two appeals filed by Mansour against the two sentences, local state-run news outlet Al-Ahram online reported.
The report added that the verdicts are final and cannot be appealed before a higher court.
Mansour, a former lawmaker, is known for his hot temper and vocal criticism of aspects of Egyptian society and public figures.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) boycotted Mansour last month over alleged “transgressions” committed by him.
The British head of referees at the EFA Mark Clattenburg resigned in the same month after only five months into the job.
The UK-based Sun newspaper reported that Clattenberg had fled Egypt, sending his resignation letter to the association from home after receiving threats from Zamalek fans. This led him to fear for his life and leave the country.
Mansour had reportedly accused Clattenberg, 47, of being in a gay relationship after leaving his wife, charges Mansour denied a few days later in an interview with a local news outlet.
