US President Joe Biden watched Morocco's World Cup match against France with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch on Wednesday after speaking before African leaders at the US-Africa Leaders Summit taking place this week in Washington.

Though Morocco lost to the reigning World Cup champions, the US president congratulated the country on its historic place in the semi-finals, the first time an African country has reached such a position.

"It was a great honour to watch today's World Cup match alongside Prime Minister Akhannouch of Morocco," reads a Twitter post on the US president's POTUS account. "No matter who you're rooting for, it was remarkable to watch how much this team has been able to achieve."

The photo on the post shows Biden along with at least six others as they watched the game after France had scored its first point. Many Moroccans tweeted back, thanking the president for supporting their team.

During a speech at the summit, which seemed to take a back seat to Wednesday's match, Biden announced a number of US initiatives and investments throughout the African continent. According to the White House, tens of billions of dollars will be put toward infrastructure, renewable energy, information technology, health and agriculture.

Morocco will compete for third place against Croatia on Saturday, another opportunity for it to again make history.
