Today marks the first anniversary of the Beirut port explosion that shook Beirut, Lebanon and the world on the 4th August 2020.
In what was believed to be one of the powerful non-nuclear, man-made explosions in human history, more than 2,750 tonnes of improperly stored ammonium nitrate exploded at Beirut's port, leading to at least 218 deaths and more than 300,000 people becoming homeless.
The Beirut port explosion has since become a symbol for the Lebanese government's incompetence, negligence, and inability to face up to it's multidimensional problems. To date, there has been no justice for the victims or their families.
