Trump aid cuts leave Sudanese refugees in Egypt without healthcare

Sudanese refugees in Egypt are facing a growing healthcare crisis after the UN refugee agency suspended most medical services due to a severe funding shortfall. Among the hardest hit are cancer patients and those with chronic illnesses, now left without access to life-saving treatment. The cuts follow a drastic drop in donor contributions, including significant reductions by the United States under President Donald Trump’s foreign aid review. UNHCR says it received less than 50% of the $135 million required in 2023 to support nearly one million refugees and asylum seekers in Egypt. The agency has frozen over $300 million in global programs to cope. Despite being allowed to access Egypt’s public health system, most refugees cannot afford the costs. Egypt currently hosts more than 1.5 million Sudanese who fled the war that erupted in April 2023 — making it the largest host country for Sudanese refugees. Aid groups are warning of a worsening humanitarian situation unless urgent funding is restored
