Sudan’s army says it has taken full control of Khartoum, marking a turning point in its war against the UAE-backed RSF militia. Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan made the declaration from inside the presidential palace, which had been under RSF control for nearly two years.

The Rapid Support Forces are now retreating west towards Darfur, raising fears of more violence in a region already scarred by past atrocities. The war, which began in April 2023 as a power struggle between Burhan and RSF leader Hemedti, has displaced over 12 million people, killed tens of thousands, and triggered the world’s worst hunger and displacement crisis.

Rights groups accuse the RSF of war crimes and ethnic cleansing in parts of Sudan. Despite the army’s latest gains, the conflict is far from over.
