Each year on May 15, Palestinians commemorate the Nakba - the Arabic word for "catastrophe" - when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced from their homes in the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

The date May 15 was chosen because it's the date after the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. However, the Nakba never ended for Palestinians. And this year will mark 75 years since the start of the Nakba.

Here’s the story of 110-year-old Suleiman Abu-Nammous, a 1948 Nakba refugee from the Palestinian Bedouin village of Al-Butayha. This interview was conducted in 2020. Abu-Nammous died in 2021.
