Israeli police released Oscar-winning Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, a day after being injured and arrested during a raid by Israeli settlers on his village. Hamdan said he had been assaulted by settlers after filming them attacking a neighbor's house.
The attack started when a group of settlers raided a gathering for Iftar, then went on to attack villagers' houses and cause chaos. The Israeli military intervened after Palestinians started throwing rocks at the Israeli force's vehicles.
Israeli police arrested three Palestinian men, including Ballal, while no Israeli settlers were arrested. Monday's incident was the latest in which Israeli settlers have been raiding Palestinian villages and encampments in the West Bank. Palestinians and activists who monitor such attacks say the police and army typically stand by without intervening.
The best documentary at this year's Academy Awards tells the story of forced displacement of Palestinians by Israeli troops and settlers in Masafer Yatta -- An area Israel had declared a restricted military zone in the 1980s.
