As thousands of Lebanese tried to return to their homes in south Lebanon, Israeli forces killed 22 people and wounded 124 other unarmed civilians.
After the massacre committed by the Israeli troops The UN said that residents cannot yet safely return to border areas in southern Lebanon.
January 26 was the deadline for Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon under a 60-day timeline set by a November 27, 2024 ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon Hezbollah group.
The Lebanese army was to deploy to the area alongside United Nations peacekeepers. On Friday Israel had said its withdrawal would continue beyond Sunday's deadline because the "agreement has not yet been fully enforced by the Lebanese state".
The UN force said it was deploying peacekeepers to areas indicated by the Lebanese army but that "the management of crowds remains outside our mandate". The Hezbollah-Israel conflict was fought in parallel with the Gaza war and peaked in a major Israeli brutal attack, that uprooted more than a million people in Lebanon.
