Budding Turkish-German teen athlete's dreams shattered after doctors mistakenly remove kidney
A Turkish-German teenager had his dreams of becoming a star athlete shattered, when doctors at a German clinic mistakenly removed his kidney.
The fateful procedure took place when 18-year-old Kerim Ramazan Ucar went to a children's clinic in the northwestern German city of Bremen to have a spleen operation.
Ucar suffers from a hereditary blood disorder and required the procedure as part of his treatment.
After what was meant to be a simple procedure, Ucar began suffering a number of other symptoms.
"I had to have spleen surgery because my disease left me feeling sluggish. The doctors told me that I was going to have a simple operation [and that] after two days I could be discharged." Ucar was quoted by Turkey's Anadolu Agency as saying. "But after the surgery, I felt very sick. I've been suffering from pain and nausea for days."
The teenager discovered the cause of his increased sickness three days after the operation.
"When I learned the truth, my world and my dreams were destroyed. They darkened my life. How is the kidney confused with the spleen? I need to go to a hospital again for spleen surgery," he said.
Ucar's family say they will be suing the clinic for the "irremedial mistake."
