Around 43,000 athletes participated in Beirut's 14th annual marathon held in the Lebanese capital on Sunday.

This year, competitors from 99 countries took part in the marathon, including athletes with special needs.

The city's downtown square was filled with participants and supporters who gathered from the early hours of the day at Martyrs' Square.

The event was broadcast on national television, as some took the opportunity to make political statements.

"At the start line I noted a woman wearing a sign saying: I run better than the government," a participant told the Lebanese Daily Star.

Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri took part in the annual event along with a number of Lebanese lawmakers, former ministers, journalists and artists.
