A Kuwaiti driver who apparently thought having car registration plates from another Gulf country would help avoid more than 1,600 traffic citations has been hit with a huge fine.

The state-run Kuwait News Agency reported the driver racked up 1,645 driving violations while travelling under the unnamed Gulf country's plates.

The Interior Ministry's Major-General Abdullah al-Mehanna said the driver faced more than $190,000 in fines after being caught.

The statement did not identify the driver, but reminded drivers of foreign-bought vehicles they have a month's grace period to change their licence plates to Kuwaiti ones.

Countries throughout the Gulf use traffic cameras to enforce speed limits and traffic laws.

Kuwait's four million inhabitants, of which only approximately 1.2 million are Kuwaitis, own more than 1.5 million cars.

In 2014 traffic accidents killed 461 people, the Kuwait Times reported. Traffic accidents are the sixth most common cause of death in the tiny emirate.
