The United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey signed a declaration on Monday as the guarantors of a Gaza deal aimed at ending two years of war.

"The document is going to spell out rules and regulations and lots of other things," Trump said before signing, repeating twice that "it's going to hold up".

Trump landed in Egypt on Monday for a summit on Gaza, following a lightning visit to Israel after a ceasefire he brokered entered into force.

Trump's speech at the Knesset, where he hailed a "new dawn for the Middle East", also spoke of the 'victorious' military aspect of the Gaza ceasefire deal.

Earlier, Palestinians have gathered in their thousands to welcome back freed detainees, who are slowly arriving in Khan Younis on buses after being released amid the Gaza ceasefire deal.

The detainees, numbering at 1,715, will undergo medical checks following their release at Khan Younis' Nasser Hospital.

This comes after 20 living Israeli captives were released in two batches this morning, with the Red Cross facilitating the move.

Eurovision organisers push back Israel decision to December

The Eurovision Song Contest's organisers said Monday they had put back taking a decision on Israel's participation in next year's event, given the Gaza ceasefire.

The European Broadcasting Union's members were due to hold a vote next month, after a growing number of countries threatened to boycott the 2026 TV extravaganza in Vienna unless Israel was excluded over the war in Gaza.

The annual Eurovision Song Contest is world's biggest live music television event. Some 166 million viewers in 37 countries watching the 2025 competition, held in Basel, Switzerland.

The EBU, the world's biggest public service media alliance, said Monday that instead of the special meeting in November announced last month, Israel's participation would be dealt with at its regular gathering in December.

"In the light of recent developments in the Middle East, the EBU's executive board (meeting on October 13) agreed there was a clear need to organise an open and in-person discussion among its members on the issue of participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026," the EBU said in a statement.

"Consequently, the board agreed to put the issue on the agenda of its ordinary winter general assembly, which will be taking place in December, rather than organising an extraordinary session in advance."

Bernie Sanders urges Palestinian-led Gaza rebuilding effort

US Senator Bernie Sanders has welcomed the recent ceasefire and the exchange of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas, expressing hope that the truce will hold.

“The immediate priority now, amidst widespread malnutrition and starvation, must be to ensure that desperately needed humanitarian aid quickly reaches the people of Gaza,” Sanders said.

He added that global reconstruction efforts for Gaza should begin immediately but stressed that Palestinians must “guide this process and determine their future.”

Sanders also said the United States must confront its “role in this extremely dark chapter,” pointing to the supply of weapons used by Israel in the “horrendous destruction” of Gaza.

Five key elements of the Gaza genocide
9:31 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies
  1. Origins of the War – Israel launched its military campaign after Hamas’s unprecedented attack on 7 October 2023, which killed 1,219 people in Israel and saw 251 hostages taken into Gaza.

  2. Hostage Releases – Over two years, 141 hostages were freed during truces. The latest ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump, secured the release of the final 20 living captives and the return of several bodies, in exchange for 1,968 Palestinian prisoners.

  3. Humanitarian Devastation – The war has killed more than 67,800 Palestinians, mostly civilians. UN reports describe Gaza’s destruction as “unprecedented,” with 83% of buildings damaged. The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former defence minister Gallant over alleged war crimes.

  4. Regional Escalation – Fighting has spread beyond Gaza, with Hezbollah clashing with Israel in Lebanon, Houthi rebels targeting shipping, and direct drone and missile exchanges between Israel and Iran.

  5. Ceasefire and Peace Efforts – Following indirect talks in Egypt, a ceasefire took effect on 9 October. Trump’s 20-point plan includes a staged Israeli withdrawal, Hamas’s disarmament, and a transitional Gaza authority. World leaders gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh to endorse the agreement.

A United Nations official said vital humanitarian aid is now entering Gaza during the first stage of the 60-day ceasefire.

Israel has authorised "our pipeline to 190,000 metric tonnes [of aid] as of yesterday," said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"These supplies are across the region – in Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus and the West Bank – and are ready to move. Some was already on the way yesterday for the first time since March," he added.

"More tents for displaced families, frozen meat, fresh fruit, flour and medicines also crossed into Gaza throughout the day in many areas. So our teams are reaching people in places that have been cut off for up to several months."

Trump calls Italian PM 'beautiful' at Gaza summit

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

US President Donald Trump had some choice words for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the only female leader on stage at a Gaza summit in Egypt on Monday: "She's beautiful."

The three-times-married 79-year-old admitted that he risked being accused of sexism with the comments about hard-right leader Meloni, who was standing behind him on the podium.

"I'm not allowed to say it because usually it's the end of your political career if you say it -- she's a beautiful young woman," Trump said in the middle of a speech about his peace efforts for the Middle East.

"If you use the word 'beautiful' in the United States about a woman, that's the end of your political career, but I'll take my chances."

Turning round to address the 48-year-old, Trump said: "You don't mind being called beautiful, right? Because you are."

Meloni's immediate reaction could not be seen, as Trump's back was between her and the cameras.

Trump went on to call Meloni, an ideological ally when it comes to immigration and cultural issues, "incredible".

"And they really respect her in Italy. She's a very successful politician," he added.

Meloni was the only woman among around 30 leaders gathered on the stage behind Trump for the summit, where they signed a declaration pledging to help push through peace for Gaza.

Trump has previously been criticised for sexist remarks.

In September, a US appeals court upheld a jury's $83.3-million penalty against Trump for defaming author E. Jean Carroll, whom he was found to have sexually assaulted.

UK quietly hosts talks on Gaza reconstruction
7:12 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Dozens of top officials from Middle East and European nations huddled Monday with leading global financial institutions for talks in the UK on rebuilding the devastated Gaza Strip.

Far from a high-profile Gaza summit in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the UK's foreign ministry quietly brought together Middle East and European officials at an isolated mansion deep in the southern English countryside.

The aim of the three-day conference was to start the "crucial planning and coordination efforts for postwar Gaza" which would be Palestinian-led, the UK prime minister's office said in a statement.

"We must be ready to act -- to clear rubble, rebuild homes and set up infrastructure, restoring access to education and healthcare," junior foreign minister Hamish Falconer added in a statement.

"We know the scale of the task. We know how urgent it is, and how complex it will be," he added, highlighting it "will take years and cost billions".

The UK government said the talks in Wilton Park, West Sussex, which is managed by the Foreign Office, brought together "representatives from businesses, civil society and governments, to convene crucial planning and coordination efforts for postwar Gaza".

The Palestinian Authority was represented along with officials from countries such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Germany and Italy, the UK prime minister's office said.

Officials from the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development were also attending to support what Falconer called an Arab Reconstruction Plan.

"We must also lay the groundwork for long-term economic development," Falconer said, insisting that "Gaza and Palestine more broadly, has real economic potential".

The talks aimed to examine how to "unlock the vast resources needed, not just through traditional donor finance, but by thinking creatively to bring in private capital", he said.

The UK was well-placed to help, with "deep expertise in private investment and strong links to the City of London", he added.

Turkey, Iraq pressure forced Netanyahu to pull out of summit

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

The opposition of Turkey and Iraq to the presence of Benjamin Netanyahu at Monday's Gaza summit in Egypt prompted him to cancel at the last minute, two diplomatic sources told AFP.

"At the initiative of President (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan and through Turkey's diplomatic efforts -- with the support of other leaders -- Netanyahu did not attend the meeting in Egypt," a Turkish diplomatic source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the press.

Earlier, the Egyptian presidency confirmed Netanyahu's presence at the summit, but some 40 minutes later, the Israeli leader's office issued a statement saying he would be unable to attend.

Although he was "invited" to attend by Trump, Netanyahu would not be attending "due to the timing" which coincides with the start at sundown of the Jewish holiday of Simhat Torah, it said.

According to Turkish media reports, Erdogan learned of Netanyahu's expected attendance while en route to Sharm El-Sheikh, with his plane circling over the Red Sea and refusing to touch down until it was confirmed he would not be attending.

Separately, an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Shia al-Sudani told AFP the Iraqi delegation would boycott the summit if Netanyahu was there.

"The Iraqi delegation informed the Egyptian side that it was not prepared to participate in the regional summit if Netanyahu attended," presidential adviser Ali al-Mousawi told AFP.

"Iraq has taken a clear position on this matter and has informed the Egyptians of its rejection, and a number of other delegations have announced their intention to withdraw if Netanyahu participates," he said.

Hamas on Monday claimed victory with the release of around 2,000 Palestinian detainees set to begin, but will honour a truce with Israel, according to a statement by the group.

The armed movement said it had secured the release of hundreds of Palestinian detainees, and that Israel had failed in its military objectives in Gaza, with a deal being reached last week similar to one Hamas offered Israel at the start of the war.

It said it was always keen on ending the genocide, but Israel had thwarted several attempts to bring peace.

Gaza has been utterly destroyed in two years of bombing, with tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli forces.
