Mass demonstrations planned across US for 4th of July weekend against Trump's 'bill beautiful bill'
Mass demonstrations are planned throughout the United States for the 4th of July Independence Day weekend following the congressional passage of President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill" extending tax cuts to billionaires.
The demonstrations, starting Friday, are expected to be some of the largest gatherings since Trump took office in January, given the passage of an unpopular bill Thursday, expected to be signed by the president on Independence Day.
"We expect outrage across the country, especially in a city like Chicago, which has been fighting against ICE [Immigration and Customs enforcement] and Trump's agenda," Nick Sous, a Chicago-based member of the US Palestinian Community Network," told The New Arab.
"This is important because it's bringing about massive budget cuts for programme like social security and food stamps that are providing resources for communities," he said.
Though many people at anti-Trump demonstrations are not aligned on all issues, Sous says there is a growing recognition of overlapping interests in different causes.
The last day of mass protests were the 14 June "No Kings" demonstrations, to counter Trump's parade to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the army, which also fell on his birthday.
In a sign of the times, many localities that would normally celebrate the 4th of July holiday with fireworks have cancelled festivities over concerns of ICE raids arresting immigrants gathered for the holiday.
East Los Angeles and the city of Bell Gardens in California has cancelled all 4th of July events over concerns about ICE raids in these majority-Hispanic locations.
On social media, the Los Angeles County of Parks and Recreation, wrote in a statement, "Out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities, we are prioritising safety and well-being of our residents, visitors, and staff."
